President Grover Cleveland & Queen Lili‘uokalani Educational Project holds multiple events, lectures

www.hawaiirestoration.com – George Cleveland, grandson of President Grover Cleveland, will visit Hawaii August 30 through September 5 as part of the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center’s Grover Cleveland – Queen Lili‘uokalani Education Project, in honor of Queen Lili‘uokalani’s birthday Sept. 2 and St. Andrew’s 150th Anniversary.

This visit will promote the legacy and history of both Queen Lili‘uokalani and President Cleveland, which is vital and dynamic for today and the future.

Rep. Kymberly Pine Responds to Approval of Queen's to Purchase HMC-West Facility

HONOLULU – Rep. Kymberly Marcos Pine issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement that The Queen’s Medical Center has been approved to purchase the former Hawaii Medical Center-West facility:
 
“It is great news for the Leeward Coast that the process is moving forward to resume medical care to the hospital. I welcome Queen’s to our community and look forward to the new owners restoring services as quickly as is safely possible. For the sake of our people, I ask Queen’s to do everything in its power to especially expedite the process of reopening the facility's emergency room portion. The Leeward Coast simply can’t afford another year of compromised emergency services.”

The Queen's Medical Center announced earlier this month that it plans to have the entire facility reopened in August 2013.

$1.25 Million From Uehiro Foundation Promotes Philosophy For Young Minds

The Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education of Tokyo, Japan has pledged $1.25 million to fund The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education.  The Academy will be located in the College of Arts & Humanities and serve students and teachers from Hawai‘i, the U.S., Japan, and other international locations.
 
“The creation of the Uehiro Academy will greatly enhance the work of P4C Hawai‘i,” said Dr. Thomas Jackson, executive director of the Philosophy for Children (P4C) program in the Department of Philosophy at UH Mānoa. He continued, “It will expand to four the number of educators who will be working full time to extend the reach of P4C to more schools and teachers in Hawai’i and abroad who have shown great interest in this philosophical approach to educational transformation.”
 
Waikiki Elementary School and Kailua High School are the major P4C implementation sites on Oahu that serve as Model Schools.

Learn from Author "How to Publish Your Book" at Waianae Library

Author Marilyn Mendoza will present “How to Publish Your Book” at Waianae Public Library on Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m.  The free program for adults will be conducted in the Meeting Room.                           

Mendoza, author of “From Agoraphobia to Zen: Uncovering the Core of My Anxiety and Reclaiming My Life” (2011), was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and is now a Makaha resident.  The book presents the author’s true story about her lifelong struggle with panic attacks, agoraphobia, and food addiction.

Mendoza’s presentation will focus on how she got her book published.  Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

Driver identified in fatal H-1 freeway crash

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has identified the driver who was killed in a crash on the H-1 freeway.

She was 21-year-old Lisa Ledward of Waipahu. Waianae resident John Herzog, 27, was also killed in the crash.

A 15-year-old boy was also injured in the crash.

According to police, Ledward lost control in the Waianae-bound lanes near the Kualakai Parkway off ramp in Kapolei last weekend, causing her truck to go up the right shoulder lane and overturn.
