Hawaii Meth Project Announces Winners in Statewide Teen Art Contest

HONOLULU––January 10, 2013––The Hawaii Meth Project today has announced the winners of its “Take a Stand Against Meth” art contest, a statewide initiative designed to leverage the creativity and passion of Hawaii’s young people to communicate the risks associated with methamphetamine use.  To compete in the contest, teens throughout the state created and entered paintings, drawings, and photographs, expressing their thoughts about Meth use and discouraging others from trying this highly addictive drug.  61 entries were created by teens from the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, and Oahu.

HONOLULU – The First Insurance Company of Hawaii (FICOH) board of directors has elected Jeff Shonka senior vice president, chief operating officer (COO). Shonka joined FICOH in 2002 as its chief financial officer. With this promotion, Shonka has assumed responsibility for key operational areas of the company, including Claims, Personal and Commercial Lines, Legal, Surety & Fidelity, and First Risk Management Services (FiRMS), a subsidiary brokerage operation for non-standard risks.

“Jeff is an invaluable member of the executive team who during his 10 years with First Insurance has not only earned the respect and trust of our officers, but of his department, our company and other industry leaders in Hawaii,” said Allen Uyeda, president and CEO of First Insurance.

Kamehameha Schools hosts A Ka Pua Holiday Celebration
Kamehameha Schools' Ka Pua Initiative is taking a moment to celebrate the holiday season with friends and neighbors in the Wai'anae Coast community.

The Ka Pua holiday celebration will offer a chance to come together for a night filled with crafts, food pictures with Santa and holiday cheer.   The evening will also be an opportunity for the community to talk story with Kamehameha Schools' Ka Pua Initiative team to learn about many of the exciting projects and programs underway including the progress on its Community Learning Center at Mā'ili, 'Ohana 'Ike college and career readiness program for Nānākuli students, a new community schools program and much more.

In addition to all of the activities, guests will be treated to a performance by the Nānākuli Performing Arts Center.
