Woman wanted for attempted murder in Makaha

MAKAHA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public's help in locating May Iwa Brewer who is wanted for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.

On May 19, 2013, shortly after 4:40 p.m., the victim was seated in her vehicle on Farrington Highway in Makaha when she was approached by Brewer. Police say Brewer brandished a handgun, demanded money, and struggled for the victim's property.

During the struggle, the handgun went off, and the victim was struck in her head. Brewer got into a nearby vehicle operated by an unknown male and drove off.

Height: 5'6"
Weight: 250 lbs.
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown

Police investigate fatal moped crash in Kalaeloa

KALAELOA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Honolulu Police are investigating a deadly moped accident in the Kalaeloa area.

The crash happened at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday on Franklin D. Roosevelt Ave.  According to first responders, a moped and a truck collided, killing a woman in her 50s.  The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Police have closed the road where the crash occurred from Philippine Sea to Coral Sea Road as they investigate.

Siren and emergency alert test scheduled for Wednesday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- The Civil Defense monthly
test of the statewide outdoor siren warning system, coordinated with the test
of the live audio broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled
for Wednesday, May 1, at 11:45 a.m.

Mailani Wendt, an eighth grader at Kapolei Middle School, will read
the Emergency Alert System live audio broadcast for the month of May. Mailani
is the winner of the jointly-sponsored Tsunami Awareness poster contest, which
asked Hawaii students in grades K-12 to draw posters showing where they would
go in the event of a tsunami.

The siren test is a steady
one minute tone on all sirens. The steady tone is used to alert the public to
any emergency that may pose a threat to life and property. Besides natural
hazards, the Emergency Alert System could be used for terrorist incidents or
acts of war.

Gabbard visits Hawaii schools targeted for reforms

HONOLULU (AP) - U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is visiting low-income, low-performing Hawaii schools targeted for education reforms under a $75 million federal grant.

The congresswoman's office says Gabbard is visiting the schools to get an update on progress they're making toward Race to the Top reforms. She visited Keaau High and Keaau Middle schools on the Big Island Tuesday.

On Wednesday, she's heading to Oahu's Leeward Coast to visit schools in Nanakuli.

Schools in Waianae and Nanakuli on Oahu and in Kau, Keaau and Pahoa on the Big Island make up the zones most affected by the reforms.

The U.S. Department of Education warned the state it hadn't made acceptable progress on a reform plan that won Hawaii the grant. They warned Hawaii could lose the money if progress isn't made.

UH West Oahu commencement ceremony Saturday, May 4

Saturday, May 4, is a special day for University of Hawaii - West O‘ahu graduates who will be honored during spring commencement exercises held on the UH West O‘ahu Great Lawn.

There will be 223 degrees and certificates awarded to the graduates. Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui will deliver the keynote address.

"It is with great pride that we celebrate spring commencement at our new Kapolei campus," said Gene I. Awakuni, who was recently awarded the title of chancellor emeritus. "We are so proud of our graduates and wish them all the best as they pursue their career and life goals after leaving the university."

Police seek Waipahu kidnapping, sex assault suspect

WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public's assistance in locating a male wanted for Kidnapping and Sexual Assault in the Third Degree.

On April 25 at approximately 4:25 p.m., a juvenile female was walking on Farrington Highway in Waipahu when she was approached from behind by an unknown male.

The male inappropriately touched the victim then wrestled her to the ground, police say. A witness driving by observed the incident and drove her vehicle toward the suspect.

The male fled on his bicycle in an unknown direction.

Governor presents $450,000 grant to Filipino Community Center

WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Gov. Neil Abercrombie Monday presented a $450,000 check to The Filipino Community Center, Inc. (FilCom), representing the recent release of a state capital improvement grant for installation of a photovoltaic (PV) system.

"This project will produce electricity for the FilCom Center that will substantially reduce its electric bills and move our community toward energy independence," said Gov. Abercrombie. "The FilCom Center will use the savings to expand its services while perpetuating the Filipino heritage within the larger multi-cultural community in Hawaii."

Appropriated by the 2012 Legislature, the grant will be used to construct and install a roof-mounted, micro-inverter, internet monitoring PV system that is expected to produce approximately 114,000 kWh of power per year, or about 40 percent of FilCom's current electricity usage. The installation is scheduled to be completed within six months.
